RETURN TO QUESTIONS

How do I find other hotels in the general area of a hotel which is 'sold out'?

Sometimes all the hotels listed under the city you have selected are sold out. Special events and very popular destinations (such as popular beaches) will frequently be sold out.

Or, there may well be times when, in searching for a place to stay, you find a hotel in the desired location but you desire amenities that hotel doesn't offer - or you don't want to pay that much - or, for any reason, you really would like to try other hotels that are located near the area of your search. For many locations, we now have a way to do this.

.

  • On the page with the actual hotel listings, on the bottom line of the listing of each hotel, is a pair of links:  the left most link reads: 'more hotels near this one'
  • Just left click on that item and the computer will look through the database for any hotels in the same area and present them to you in a new window.
  • This new listing will have additional information to the right of the hotel address informing you the search point distance of each hotel from the one from which this list was generated. Please be advised that these distances are 'as the bird flies' and not along a specific traffic pattern.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

How do I review - or cancel - a reservation I made previously?

We use Pegasus, Sabre, and other hotel room brokers. Each of these companies has a different approach to making, reviewing and canceling on-line reservations. For specific instructions for the page you are viewing, select 'Help' - the right-most word of the top line of the navigation group near the top of that page.

.

If you made your reservation using our Courtesy Help Desk, you must phone them to correct or cancel that reservation. 1-888-254-0637 (toll-free) if in the USA or Canada - or 1-972-894-1173 if in any other country. In all cases, the promo code 5142 is necessary to help the reservationist find your reservation.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Why are the city names omitted from some of your maps?

Two very important reasons:

First. If you have seen our 'big map' you have seen how crowded it is with the city names. If we were to attempt to insert the city names in the regular Interstate maps (which are much smaller), the type size would have to be too small to be legible.

.

Second. The regular Interstate maps were designed to load as quickly as possible for folks using a '56 Kbps' modem. This is why we mention that site visitors fortunate enough to have high speed service (DSL, ISDN, cable, etc.) can access our big map - which, for them, loads on seconds. (This map is recommended for larger monitors.)

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

How can I know what city is represented by one of the 'golden suns'?

Place your mouse pointer on one of the golden suns () on any of our maps - and hold it there for a few seconds. The name of the city will appear (in about 3 seconds). If you have a very old browser, this function may not be supported.

.

If your browser does not support this function, you can use our big map (Big Map). Because this file is much larger, it will take longer to load depending on your Internet connection.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Why are so many cities missing from your maps?

There just isn't room. Therefore we have consulted statistics allowing us to select those cities having the most 'room nights' for each state.

.

If we still had too many - or certain cities are grouped too closely to allow all of them to be included, we have made arbitrary selections.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Why aren't all the 2-digit Interstate Highways pictured on your maps?

There just isn't room. There are so many, short, 2-digit Interstate highways in the north central and north eastern states that the whole area would be red if we were to include them.

Most of these short Interstates are neat short cuts connecting only two or three cities, but, to the people that use them regularly, they are very important.

.

We are concentrating on the long-distance routes - at least for now. Perhaps, as computer technology gives us better and bigger monitors at less cost (isn't this already happening?), we will be able to expand ALL the maps for 17 inch monitors.

We may include some of these other Interstates in the lists even if not on the maps. We'll see.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Why aren't text descriptions included for all the Interstate Highways you have listed?

We are working very hard to complete them all. While every Interstate highway portrayed on our maps has been traveled by at least one of our staff members, they don't remember past travels well enough to write the descriptions we want to make available to you.

.

We are traveling these Interstate highways, again, taking copious notes, so our editorial staff can write description which will be of more benefit to you.

We welcome comments from our site visitors

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Why aren't all the cities having hotels or motels listed?

We only list cities having hotels offering discounted rates through the major room brokers (e.g., Pegasus, Saber World Choice). These hotels usually do not offer the discounted rates on a permanent basis so you may get an error message telling you that a city is not available at this time (this only happen with the smaller cities with only one or two discount hotels).

.

Other factors affecting the availability of discounts are seasonal popularity and special, very popular, activities in the area. Discounts are usually resumed when the hotels 'get hungry' for guests' again.

There is a full-time, continuing effort to bring you the best possible room rates.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Why do you feel it is important to have different maps for different size monitors?

The larger the monitor, the more information can be presented on its screen. Not too long ago, 15 inch monitors were the 'standard' in computer system sales. Now it is 17 inch which displays much more information.

.

On the other side of the coin is the 'LCD' monitor (the skinny monitors which cost somewhat more then the older 'glass bottle' monitors. These are usually smaller in screen size so we have to accommodate them, also.

Who and what is Wheatley Memorial Institute?

Wheatley Memorial Institute of Information Sciences was created in 1974 as a not-for-profit corporation under section 501 (C) (3) of the 1954 Internal Revenue Code. The Institute is an electronic library engaging in the necessary research to acquire, classify, store, retrieve, disseminate and utilize information by man-machine systems and networks. So much for the legaleze. For nearly three decades, Wheatley has been involved in the improvement of the understanding and use of computer systems as tools in making the right information available to the right people at the right time.

.

Originated in 1999 by a private grant, this project is formatted to utilize information from previous projects to present (to the traveling public) Interstate Highway exit locations and particulars, available lodging, etc. We started with the Interstate Highways in North and South Carolina, expanded it to cover the central and south Atlantic Coast states*, added California and Nevada and now include the primary 1 and 2 digit Interstates in the U.S.A. In addition to available, discounted lodging, information will include links to our What-Where.info web site which lists principal attractions in North America.
